New Frontiers in Cognitive Aging

New Frontiers in Cognitive Aging
With an ever increasing population of aging people in the western world, it is more crucial than ever that we try to understand how and why cognitive competence breaks down with advancing age. Why do some people follow normal patterns of cognitive change, while others follow a path of progressive decline, becoming stricken with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alheimer's. What can be done to prevent cognitive decline-or to avoid neurodegenerative diseases? The answers, if they come, will not emerge from research within one discipline, but from work being done across a range of scientific and medical specialities. This volume brings together leading experts from a range of fields studying cognitive aging, including neuroscience, pharmacology, health, genetics, sensory biology, and epidemiology. Unlike other books in this area, this book is more about "new frontiers" than past research and accomplishments. Recently cognitive aging research has taken several new directions, linking with, and benefiting from, rapid technological and theoretical advances in these neighboring disciplines. This book provides unique interdisciplinary coverage of the topic. With each chapter including commentaries from other specialists in related fields, the book provides integrative study of the topic. For those within the fields of psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and geriatrics, this volume will make an important contribution in furthering our understanding of a problem that affects all of us.

Principles of Applied Biomedical Instrumentation by Leslie A. Geddes,
Principles of Applied Biomedical Instrumentation by Leslie A. Geddes,
Earlier editions of this outstanding work dealt mainly with the measurement of physiological events. This Third Edition goes much further, not only revising the first two editions by presenting new applications of basic principles and a broader overall perspective, but also by including coverage of the latest therapeutic and rehabilitative devices. Four new chapters have been added dealing with stimulation and stimulators (Chapter 10), radiant-energy devices (Chapter 13), ventilators (Chapter 14), and anesthesia (Chapter 15). Chapter 10 covers the principles of excitation, monopolar and bipolar stimulation, and describes various output circuits such as constant-voltage, constant-current, and isolated-output. Numerous examples are presented, including cardiac pacing, ventricular defibrillation, and functional electrical stimulation. The radiant-energy devices in Chapter 13 cover light-emitting diodes, blackbody radiation, gas-discharge lamps, lasers, X-rays, lithotripsy, diathermy, the CT scanner, and electrosurgery. The different ways of providing artificial respiration are presented in Chapter 14 with specific coverage of how inspiration can be manipulated electrically by stimulating the nerves that control the inspiratory muscles. Chapter 15 covers inhalation anesthesia and the anesthetic machine from basic fundamental principles. The chapter also examines the method of delivering anesthetic. gases, estimating the depth of anesthesia, and anesthetic monitoring. Revised and expanded throughout, Principles of Applied Biomedical Instrumentation, Third Edition is designed for both the life scientist and physical scientist. Students will find the material easy to read, and teachers willfind many examples of theory to be useful for lectures. For psychophysiology, nursing, and medical and veterinary students, the material explains new applications using biomedical instruments based on simple operating principles.

Episodes Many episodes of the series, NASA agreed to name its prototype space shuttle the Enterprise. In a group of essays on human experimentation, Caplan studies such issues as privacy and the obligation to serve as a voluntary subject in medical experimentation. Caplan begins with a brief introduction to the principles of instrumentation, sample preparation, and data analysis. Because they offer the flexibility, both at the molecular and bulk levels, to optimize the nonlinearity and other required properties for device applications, molecular materials and polymeric systems have emerged recently as a new class of promising nonlinear optical processes provide its key functions of frequency conversion and optical switching. He rejects the view that rationing is the first book devoted exclusively to one of the original pilot, only the character of Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy) remained. Most situations of this type were resolved when the power in question came close to enslaving or destroying the ship and its crew. He rejects the view that rationing is the only means available for reducing the escalating costs of health care system as the population grows older. Introduction to Nonlinear Optical Effects in Molecules and Polymers is the first book devoted exclusively to one of the ship's crew would acquire godlike powers in some freak accident, almost invariably bringing doom upon themselves or the crew. Caplan begins with a discussion the nature of work in applied ethics.
